The winery
LAGARDE winery was founded in 1897 and is one of the oldest and most traditional wineries in the Lujan de Cuyo Region, Province of Mendoza, in western Argentina. The region of Lujan de Cuyo is well known worldwide for its great climatic conditions for winemaking, excellent value wines, as well as beautiful scenic views at the foothills of the Andes Mountains and its Aconcagua (22,800 feet).
THE REGION
The region of Lujan de Cuyo is recognized as “Zona Alta” or the heights of the Mendoza River and is one of the few Argentine wine regions with a “Controlled Appellation” system. This region has a long-standing reputation for producing excellent wines, acquired mainly due to the outstanding natural conditions of the valley with excellent soil, and weather conditions with average temperatures ranging from –10C to 30C (14F to 86F). In addition, pure and fresh water from melting snows and glaciers in the Andes Mountains runs into the Mendoza desert through extensive man-made irrigation systems.
THE HISTORY
Capitan Pereyra and his brother founded the LAGARDE winery in 1897. Originally from Spain, they had come to Mendoza with the dream of establishing a winery dedicated to small production of high quality wines. Having no descendants to continue with the winery, in 1977 Captain Pereyra sold LAGARDE to the Pescarmona family who continues to preserve the tradition of creating high quality wines from LAGARDE winery’s own vineyards.
The main building which houses the winery, dates from 1897 and is a profound example of Colonial architecture, made with adobe walls (a traditional turn of the century construction material made of mud and hay covered with stucco) and original wood beamed roofs lined with reeds. The LAGARDE winery is one of the last examples of this type of architecture in Mendoza.
The early wine masters would elaborate fine wines from original grapes varieties such as Malbec and Semillon, in fact LAGARDE currently has less than 800 bottles of the oldest wine in South America, a Semillon 1942 vintage that was bottled in 1990 and kept in since then in their own private cellars.
THE FINCAS
LAGARDE only produces wines from the grapes of its own vineyards. LAGARDE currently owns a total of 240 hectares (593 acres) of vineyards located on various properties such as Finca Lagarde (2,800 feet) in Lujan de Cuyo, which is directly behind the winery and cultivates Malbec grapevines of more than 65 years old making these grapevines some of the oldest in the region; Finca La Jacintana (3,200 feet) in Lujan de Cuyo with varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and where for the first time in Argentina a Viognier grapevine has been planted and cultivated; Finca Sebastián (3,700 feet) in Tupungato Valley where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties are cultivated for the elaboration of a limited number of 50,000 bottles a year of sparkling wine, using a traditional method also known as the “Bottle Fermented Method”.
THE WINES
With an emphasis on high quality and excellence, LAGARDE produces only a limited number of 50,000 to 60,000 cases per year of red and white value wines such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Throughout its rich and long history, LAGARDE remains committed to the pursuit of excellence in the cultivation of the grapes and the elaboration of one of Argentine’s finest quality wines.
During the past three decades, LAGARDE has been participating in various international wine summits and received many medals and awards including the Citadelle D’or in Bordeaux, France for the Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 vintage and the Syrah 1994 vintage.
